Two Left Feet

“I wasn’t born to dance.”
“There’s not a dancing bone in my body.”
“I have two left feet.”
"I have no rhythm."
I’ve heard them all… and honestly, I’ve felt them too.
One of my African dance teachers once told me, “If you can walk, you can dance.”And that idea has stayed with me ever since.
When you really think about it, dancing is just putting rhythm to your walk. That’s it. It doesn’t have to be complicated, perfect, or polished. You just have to begin.
I once heard that dancing uses a different part of the brain, and that some people who struggle to walk are still able to dance. I find that fascinating. There is something so powerful about that. It reminds me that dance is not just about ability. It’s about connection, expression, and willingness.
Over the years, I’ve met people who truly seemed to have “two left feet,” and others who started out who caught on really fast. The truth is, it doesn’t really matter.
What matters is whether you want to learn and improve.
Every movement can be taught. Every skill can be practiced. Some moments will feel easy, and others will stretch you. But the people who keep coming back, keep trying, and keep practicing are the ones who become great dancers.
Not because it came naturally. Not because they were born with perfect rhythm. But because they showed up.
That’s the really secret.
Determination will take you further than talent ever will. Showing up will always win over the story that says, “I just can’t dance.”
Because the truth is, anyone can learn. Everyone has potential. But it’s the ones who keep going that grow into confident dancers. Two left feet or not.
