The First Step Is The Hardest

Written by Jessie Keller, September 10, 2026
I want to share something personal with you.
The first step was the hardest for me.
I remember being a beginner and having this deep urge to dance. I had no idea what I was walking into, but I wanted it so badly. At the same time, there was another voice in my head constantly telling me what a terrible idea it was. It reminded me of every awkward moment, every time I had felt embarrassed, every reason I might fail.
For me, the hardest part was the drive to the studio.
I would be so excited to go, but that whole drive, I had to listen to that voice telling me to turn around. It tried everything to convince me I was making a fool of myself before I had even walked through the door.
But I was lucky.
At the first class I ever attended, the teacher asked if I could stay for the intermediate class. Now I understand what it’s like to need more leaders or followers in a class, but at that moment, it changed my life.
Suddenly, I had something stronger than the voice in my head.
The thought that came to me was simple: “But he needs me.”
Those may not sound like powerful fighting words, but for me, they were everything.
They got me to class. They got me to events. They kept me from turning around and going home. They helped me keep showing up.
And once I was there, I had more fun than I could have imagined. I laughed hard, smiled big, and absolutely loved it.
Over time, those voices started to fade.
And eventually, after I became a teacher and opened my own studio, I realized something had changed.
I no longer needed someone else’s reason to show up. I could stand on my own. I could walk in on my own. I did not have to fight myself the whole way there anymore.
I’m sharing this because I know I’m not the only one who has felt nervous, unsure, or afraid to begin.
Sometimes the hardest part is not the dancing. It’s just taking that first step.
It’s getting in the car.
It’s walking through the door.
But that first brave step can change so much more than you realize.
So if you’ve been thinking about coming, but the voices in your head are getting loud, I want you to know you’re not alone.
I understand that feeling more than you know.
And I also know that something wonderful might be waiting for you on the other side of that first step.
